Marriage and relationship education classes are designed to give people skills they need to build strong, permanent marriages, or to strengthen existing non-marital relationships.

These skills do not seek to replace traditional therapy for people who need it. But most people do not need psychotherapy to deal with their problems. Most people need help in a few areas and research over the past 20 years has clearly demonstrated that relationships can be strengthened and problems resolved with the help of skillsbuilding classes. In addition to teaching skills, this class should promote the value of marriage. Participants must understand that marriage is best for their children and is best for their own lives.
  • Married people live longer. Men average almost 10 years longer.
  • Married people have better sex.
  • Married women suffer much less physical abuse than women who are dating or co-habiting.
  • Children who grow in married homes have much lower chance of being a victim of crime.
They also have a much lower chance of committing a crime for which they will be jailed.
  • Children do much better in school and get better jobs if they are raised by married parents.
  • Married men earn more money.
  • Children raised by their married fathers have a much lower chance of being abused.
Statistically, nearly one out of every two new marriages will fail. The cost of such failure is enormous, not just to the individuals involved and their children, but to society. However, these statistics do not suggest that all marriages have a 50-50 chance of survival, or that nothing can be done to improve the odds. Marriages succeed when both people are committed to the idea that they must stay together and work out their issues. Only when people believe in the value of marriage will they make the effort to stay together through difficult times.
