| Assumptions of the Program |
Certain assumptions guide the exercises in this program. While the assumptions may
not be true in every case, they will more often be true than not, based on a substantial
body of social science research. For example, this program assumes that physical abuse
in a relationship is usually is inflicted by men on women. This is not always the case,
but it is the norm. The program also assumes that when there is conflict in a relationship over the frequency of sex, it is usually because the man wants to have sex more often than the woman does. These assumptions are not correct 100 percent of the time. Some women abuse men physically. Some men are less interested in sex than their partners. You should acknowledge these assumptions when you start the Anger Management and Practicing Fidelity sections, but the exercises can be helpful in providing skills regardless of the gender of the partner who has difficulties in these areas. The rules, skills, exercises, and homework will all be effective even when the sex roles are reversed. |
