In addition to teaching specific skills that can be of benefit in any relationship, this
program also promotes the value of marriage. All relationships are not equal. Marriage
is best for wife, husband, and children. We need to encourage all participants to
understand this simple fact. Our culture has degraded marriage as an institution for
over 30 years. We have made “no fault” the basis of divorce laws in most states, making
it much easier for couples who are going through a rough period to simply end their
relationship, with little or no regard to the children who will be most seriously affected
by this decision. In an effort not to stigmatize children who grow up in single parent homes, we have begun to teach that marriage is just one among many different ways to raise children. But we know now from decades of research that children who grow up without two parents have many more problems in school, often get into trouble with the law, are much more likely to become single parents, and may have difficulty forming committed relationships that lead to stable marriages. This course is based on the premise that marriage is the best environment to raise children, and that promoting strong, healthy marriages will benefit not just the partners but their children and communities. This workbook is organized into four sections, covering the four basic skills sets, each of which is designed to be taught in approximately two-hour classes. |
